(ENGLISH)
It may seem that eating disorders are an illness that is very far from us, or at least from which we’re protected just by not being superficial people. But the truth is a very different one: even if people who suffers from this want to see themselves look good, this need –which is understandable in a healthy way- always comes from other deeper problems. And even if troubles as bullying are the firsts to pop to our mind, in many cases this kind of disorders come from other things that don’t need to be related with someone atacking our body –at least not directly-. Based on witnesess that I’ve heard, on my own experience and my researches, I'll tell you some of the symptomes that can push people to this situation, so that you can get conscious about how easy to get a bad relation with food is. I also want to say that this information can be useful even for those who are sure about not having any posibility of suffering this problem, or about having close people who does. This can be also useful to verybody, because what can develop eating disorders can also create other types of disorders, as depression, anxiety, lack of self esteem…in which we can all fall.
Here there are some of the causes, and my advices for trying to solve or prevent them, to avoid falling into any major trouble:
1- Feeling of extreme pressure: The sensation of having to satisfy high expectatives towards others or to oneself. They can be academic expectatives, laboral or phisical ones. Sometimes people who are specially valued for their body, use to focus more on it and it’s “defects”, inorder to mantain this satus that they feel their body gives them.
Normally all this pressures are basically created by ourselves, and generally nobody expects too much from us. Even so, if they do, it isn't at all with the intention of hurting us, and they’ll stop as soon as they realize that we’re having a bad time. So we need to ask ourselves who’s really creating those pressures: if it’s us, we need to put things into context and see how worthy is to suffer so much for this objective. If we decide that it is, we need to help us understand that it’s always easier to achieve our goals by being good with ourselves. From the “observers” side, sometimes is good to show admiration for the character and personality of a person more than for the physicall atributes. Even if compliments about physique are healthy, you should make sure that this person apreciates himself first for being just them….and that physic will come later. One of the most common eating disorder that comes from this cases is anorexy.
2- Insatisfaction towards life, boredom: Usally the most passional, thinker, reflexive people, tent to have very high expectations towards life and human relationships. And since trying to satisfy this expectations requires a lot of work and knowdledge…there comes a lot of disappointment with it. And this kind of people often feel a big emptiness inside them and boredom towards life. This emptiness is very painful and usually is preceded of depression, which can also be develop eating disorders itself. The most common ED's coming from this tent to be bulimia and binge-eating disorders –as people who suffers from it tries to fill that emptiness with food-. Even so, anorexy can also appear in this cases, by using the obsession for a “nice” body to fill this gap and be able to not think about anything else.
This may be the example which I can give the least specific advices, because everyone has to find out which are their frustrated expecations, and what “fills” them the most –not talking about food-. I think that is very important to see which are the goals or status that we want to achieve, and name, tag or image them. Once we’ve tagged it, we’ll see that there’s nothing completely impossible, or at least anything that can’t be adapted. We need to try to live a life that's compatible with what we want to achieve, that leads us to this direction. But we need to get there through self-love, and always by being respectful to us. We can try new hobbies and don’t close into the “mental sedentarism” status.
3-Heartbreaks: Some disappointments related to couples, even if they take place during the relationship itself –like feeling lack of attention or distance from the other- or, the most common thing, when breakups. It often leads us to blame ourselves for it. Sometimes we unconsciously blame us for not having being able to attract enough the other, or to have stop being “lovable” to them. This can also end up on blaming our body, or on feeling an emptiness that leads us to the example 2.
We need to be concious that if this person has stopped loving us/feeling attracted to us, it is not because of our body, since if he was once attracted to this body –that hasn’t changed- it can be the same body who make them change their mind. We also need to have in account the possibility that it’s not our fault, or that is no one’s fault. And if we’ve really done something wrong that we cannot change, we must focus on “closing” it the best we can and to learn from it. But it’s never our body the cause of a breakup, because we already had it when we started that relationship, and love can't be sustained only by something as superficial as that.
Since the first post in this section of the blog I started reciveing many supportive messages and whitnesses of similar experiences…thanks a lot!
Today I want to share some of this anonymus whitnesses related to eating disorders, to friends of someone who has suffered them, or to people who almost falls into this kind of disorders –I’ll keep posting more of them later-:
“It all started by suffering bullying at school. This created an insecurity on me that made my self steem go lower and lower. Apart from that, since I was 6, at home everyday they kept telling me I was fat –which I wasn’t- but I ended up believing it.
I started having problems with food at primary school, and this is still bothering me now.
I’ve been I year without barely eating because the guy I liked said he hated fat girls and as I thought I was I lost intencionately a lot of weight. At the end of the year I recovered every single kilo because of the anxiety caused by the caloric restriction I forced myself…and I even won some extra kilo.
During all this years I’ve been unstable with food.
I can binge and then barely eat…I know that’s bad and I want to change it but even if I think a lot about it I can’t help it.
Even somedays I have gone to the pharmacy and buyed this typical pills that are supposed to help loosing weight. I’ve buyed many of them and lost a lot of Money on it…but I mostly end up without even trying them.”
"I’m almost 17 and it’s been three years since I was about to fall into anorexy. By this time I was doin 2nd of ESO, I started dating someone and things seemed to work out well. It came a momento when I didn’t felt comfortable with my body, I felt fat and ugly. The only solution I could find was to stop eating systematically. I was doing it secretely; now I throw a sandwich away, now I leave half of my dish, now I “forget” about eating a meal…Until my mother began noticing it. Sometimes I don’t like having such a protective mother, but it was thanks to her attention that I didn’t fall ill. She brought me to my doctor, who knew me since I was a child and who knew about my phobia to needles. She “threated” me on making an analithic if I didn’t recover the kilos I had lost. This day when I arrived home, I looked at me in the mirror and asked: “Are you really going to let food control your life?”. I had to see my friends crying and my parents worried to realice that this would’nt take me anywhere.”
"I have some friends who have suffered anorexy and bulimia. One of them, the first time she said that “she wasn’t satisfied with her body and made herself vomite”. I was shocked, didn’t expect that from her at all. All the boys of our class are attracted to her, they see her as a “diva”. And her, to try not loosing this status, started worring.”
"(...) When one day she feels like eating two doughnuts and some pieces of chocolate cake, it may come to your head to tell her: wooow, what a fatty!. O, think that this “fatty” you say, may be looking for hours at the mirror and “cut” mentally the “grease” that is “left” on her. Think that this “fatty” you say, may spent lots of days trying to make herself vomite. Think that this “fatty” you say, may just want to have some sweet and fun and that, because of your comment, she’ll change her dreams of travelling for an only dream: being skinny.
