I aquell dia no et vols sentir foraster.
Si teniu massa ansietat (i això jo ho he utilitzat en dies posteriors) proveu a caminar.
I quedeu-vos tips.
Força, salut, ànims i amor! Sou suficients ;)
(ENGLISH)
There isn’t a formula to avoid binge eating, and, if there was, I wouldn’t be the one who ha dit. You all know that I still can’t control this complusive conduct with food, but also with my feelings and actions. Also this binge eating can come from so many different situations and scenes that is imposible to generalize a practise to avoid them –at least an specific one-. But as these days I’ve been a lot in Barcelona, and that the huge variety of food that the city has to offer is something against what I was specially “weak”, when I discovered a way of facin git, I decided to tell you about it –as many of us also told me that is in the city when you’re “in risk” the most-.
Here I copy a text I wrote just after having “won” binge eating –and almost without believing it!-, and just after it I’ll make a summary about the steps to follow, and what brought me to that situation.
You go out from an intense Yoga on a cloudy day. In Pi’s square is raining, but you can’t barely notice it from the tiny streets. You come from a pretty anxious day –that’s why you’ve gone to Yoga-, and you need to feel more “welcomed” in such a big city, such a big world. You walk throught the old town of Barcelona (El Gòtic), you visit the jewish ancient neighbourhood, Petritxol street. But all the spots feel fake, lacked of authenticism, very touristic, and you don’t feel invited to come in. They make you feel even fore foreginer than you already feel today. And you don’t feel like feeling as a stranger. You don’t feel like having a normal lunch, but it’s ten past two and you’re hungry. But no, you don’t feel like pretending normality on a day that is not. You look for a metro stop without much effort, because actually, you don’t really know where to go. Suddenly, an showcase of sweets shines in a corner. They’re not industrial, but the table is all abundance. You move the look and descover an ancient and charming store. White courtines protect the place from the noice of the streets, and the light with spider shape, the candles on the tables and the white wooden furniture hug your mood of having a moment for you. An old lady,a local, is siting on a small table and eating an almond pastry as lunch. Without distractions, cellphone, interlocutor...she’s sharing with her sweet an special moment of the day. With the sweet, and with herself. You try to go in through the wrong door and she invites you to use the right door. Once you’re in, the store of this places welcomes you with a huge offer of torrons –tradicional catalan christmas sweet-, cookies, chocolates, jams...The waiter starts explaining you every single sweet. Every title is more delicous than the other: wallnut and crême brulée cake, “Santiago” cake, pear pie, coconut pastries, “Sacher”...A cake made with acorns surprises you, and the wallnut cake also looks incredible. Following the example of the old lady who’s smiling at your choices, you choice these two pieces and get a free coconut pastry. You sit on a table on the corner and plug yout computer. You ask for a red tea, which becames to be high quality. There’s no wifi, and finnaly you feel lucky, because that allows you to feel even more connected to yourself, to your writtings, to your projects Ypu enjoy without anxiety this moret han delicious sweet, and let this act of love to yourself make it’s efect. You enjoy this break of the city, responsabilty, rutine. You write, taste, smile, breath.
And you let the christmas ambient that flotes in the shop permeates you, and that the Puh Ehr and the acorn flavor dance in your palate. The clients are very particular: two friends who aim to catch up and warm their hands, an only man who’s having a “tallat” –kind of coffee-, an inlove couple who’re sharing a “Sacher” and kissing with cocoa lips...
And you, happy with destiny, happy of yourself, listening to the great ambiental music of these cafe/bakery, CAELUM: proud of having avoid yourself from binge eating on the sweetest way. You and your own company, even sweeter than your today’s lunch.
That day had started unstable because a weight increase in the bascule, which I hadn’t used for a while. The frustration of seeing that the more I put effort on getting over my alimentary disorder –focusing on my own acceptation, avoiding vomits...- the more my body decontrols, created a lot of anxiety on me. I was feeling trapped in my own body. And, diferentely from how other disorders react to weight gain –deciding drasticaly to get skinny and controling their eating-, in my case it generates, yes, aim of lossing weight, but mostly a terrible anxiety and worring about food even more extreme than usually –which brings me to binge eat-. As I could won that situation, here’s my advice about these days:
1. Realize you’re feeling “weak” about food, personal image, anxiety or feelings, and that you’re vulnerable to binge eating.
2. If you can –but it wasn’t my case-, look for someone’s help. Usually to talk about it and also get distracted always helps to remove the “temptation”. If you feel capable of it, you can also try to write about it, or do some activity. If you’re alone in a city, as I was, and you don’t want to do what I did yet, you can also try to go to a library to work, or to connect to social networks. Try to look for a concert, an exposition, to feed yourself...with culture. If you’re too anxious for that, try to walk –that has helped me a lot these days-. Even if the city is not the best thing to our feet, walking trought the streets helps you easialy to get distracted than in another ambient. Always bring and Ipod –or similar- with music that you know would make you feel better. But, if none of these actions can work these day and you know that you’ll eat –also it may be eating time-, I recommend you to breath, and walk trought the streets looking for a place where you can find what you really feel like eating. Especially, look for a charming and quiet place, where you can SIT for enough time to calm down. I know that the money to spend is a thing to worry about, and I’m the first one that used to spent the minimum I could for the maximum ammount when I binge eated. But nothing is too expensive when we’re talking about avoiding binge eating, and the posterior feeling. So better eat in a good, ejoyable, charming place, paying a little more, than let a money thing go over your health/self steem needs.
3. If you can share the meal with some friends will be better, but if not you can also be writing, listening to music...or with you and silence. Choose right the place where you really feel like going, and the fact that they’ll serve you a portion –no matter of what- instead of a whole bag in the middle of the noise of the street, will remove a lot of stress from the beggining. Savour it slowly, but “savour” also the place, the moment. And fell filled, but not just filled of what you’re eating. Feel filled with charm, feel filled with beauty, feel filled with contrasts, colors, music. Feel filled –in the good way- of yourselves.
PD: Part of the therapeutic thing about doing this is choosing the place by yourselves, and feel proud to discover and being able to share new places. Even so, if you want a list of places to go if the thing is too urgent, or if you’re just looking for nice and charming places to go –no need of using it as an anxiety-remover medicine-, here there’s a list of places of all kind of styles and food that I like in Barcelona –that is always growing and accepts all kind of suggestions!-: Sweet peace
Strengh, health, hope and love! You’re enough ;)
